Generation PRX T-Shirts: Wear your radio style

These are exciting times. After years of testing and suggestions, the completely new PRX.org is launching on Friday, November 21 (we'll shut down PRX temporarily as we shift things over to PRX 3.0). Our Time: Teens & Politics, the latest radio special from GPRX, KUOW, and youth producers nationwide, was licensed nearly 20 times last month. And, oh yeah, there's the general euphoria and renewed hope for change that is sweeping the globe.

Amidst all this, writes the Harvard Digital Natives Project "GPRX challenges pundits who argue that we are 'Generation Q' or the 'Quiet Americans.'" Listen to Our Time and you'll agree: whether youth producers are standing up or sitting out, there's no quiet about it.

Happy reading & listening,

Make PRX 3.0 Work for You

Playlists, comments, profiles

Mark your calendars: November 21, 2008 is the launch date of PRX 3.0. You've heard about some of what you can expect - easier design, unlimited (no kidding) storage space, social networking tools - but how can youth producers and leaders really make 3.0 work for them? Funny you should ask...

Playlists. List and share a collection of PRX pieces that you really like or want to recommend. "Best Ever Interviews," "9 Ways to Talk about Cats" - curate your favorites.

Reviews = Comments. PRX 3.0 makes it easier to share your feedback with simpler, quicker commenting.

More expanded profiles. Profiles now include space to let people know about your awards, experience and availability. For youth producers, this means more resources for life after youth radio...

The Youth Environmental Editorial Board

Reviewing goes green

The Generation PRX Editorial Board is a powerful force. The nationwide board finds, reviews, and spotlights radio made by youth. With the globe's attention turning to the natural world, what if the Youth EB could use its powers to highlight environmental youth radio?

Terrascope Youth Radio, with funding from the National Science Foundation, is helping the Youth EB get greener: One member will be dedicated to finding and reviewing youth-produced audio that looks at topics from an environmental angle. This Youth Environmental Editorial Board member will write reviews and help create a playlist of youth enviro pieces. And just like other members, s/he'll blog on the GPRX homepage, receive PRX training and oversight, and get payment in gratitude for the work. Interested? Drop a line: generationprx[at]prx[dot]org

Being a Successful Youth Producer

Lillian Warner breaks it down
Lillian Warner

Though she only started in radio this year, 17-year-old Lillian Warner is making strides. We asked the Weekday High and Youth EB member to share advice for other just-starting-out producers.

1. Listen to the radio and PRX! I'm no expert at producing radio by any means, but I think listening to the radio is really important if you want to make good stories.
2. Have someone that knows radio show you the ropes. Finding story ideas can be hard. Shaping your story can be even harder.
3. Persevere through audio-editing! It is totally worth it. If you make sure it sounds polished, you can go back later and listen to it and be proud, instead of cringing at the mistakes you left in.
4. Get input from someone else about your radio piece. Feedback is always good, because it will make your story more interesting and help you grow and learn as a writer/producer.
5. Be interested in the topic of your story. Caring about your project means you'll work hard on it, which will make other people want to listen to your story even more.

Read Lillian's complete advice and her reviews on PRX.

Tools & Ideas

ProTools! ProTools! ProTools!

Even if you're not using DigiDesign's ProTools software to edit your audio pieces, there's a very good chance that someday you will. Here are a few tools to stop you from pulling your hair out:

Once again, Jeff Towne over at Transom, saves the day with this handy article on ProTools Shortcuts. There's even a printable .pdf! What don't they think of?

Blogs. ProTools users love blogging about the software (protoolsusers.org, protoolerblog.org etc.), and while many of these bogs are dizzingly techie, we did appreciate the link to ProTools video tutorials through protoolsblog.com

  • For the second time in six months, Hopi High - which produces the only live remote Native American teen talk show in the nation - dominated the Arizona Interscholastic Press Association Contest, bringing home NINE awards. Huge Congrats!
  • And speaking of big wins, we were lucky to witness Radio Rookie Shirley "Star" Diaz give one of the best acceptance speeches EVER on winning Third Coast International Audio Festival's Silver Award for best documentary. Listen to her piece, Growing Up in the System.
  • Just in time for the holidays, craftastic Etsy.com has a special feature on gifts for public radio listeners. C'mon, who doesn't need a hand-drawn radio stamp?
