Generation PRX T-Shirts: Wear your radio style |
|
|
|
|
When Perceptions
Shattered: African American Masculinity was added to PRX in
July, it didn't just shatter download records. The radio special -
a co-production from PRX and Chicago Public Radio with funding from
the National Black Programming Consoritum - features stories by
young people that take down stereotypes. In a time of simple
sound bytes, it's a breath of thoughtfulness and
complexity.
With a special from GPRX and KUOW on Youth and Power coming at the
end of September and a third in the works, you might get the
impression that youth radio producers have unique insight into
important issues facing all of us. We couldn't agree
more.
Happy reading & listening,
Jones

It's come to our attention that a) The GPRX network is bursting at the
seams with youth radio talent and b) PRX is bursting at the
seams with quality radio produced by said talent. Here are a
few new features to help you navigate all that goodness:
What we're listening to - highlights pieces on a
particular topic, theme, style, or technique that grabs our ears.
See the archives for some of our favorite
vox pops and
interviews or guest blog about the radio pieces that
motivate and inspire YOU.
Featured Members - At over 300 members, GPRX is home
to loads o' talent. With that in mind, we've launched "Featured
Members" on the homepage to spotlight individual members. Wouldn't
this be a good time to make sure you've got a full member
profile with a photo and description? Yeah, we thought so
too.

A sneak peak
|
PRX has been listening to what users
want. After more than a year of work, and hours of testing and
re-testing, we're just about ready to unveil the new PRX.org. PRX
3.0 takes all the features you've come to rely on and adds a
user-friendly design that's even easier to navigate.
Think cleaner design, playlists, simpler ratings, listening
recommendations that match your interests and (no kidding)
unlimited audio storage. And that's the abbreviated list
of what's coming! Intrigued? Read more.
PRX
3.0 will be launching in October.

David Candow's Advice for Voicing
|
|
"The host whisperer"
Just in case you thought those smooth public radio voices came
naturally, meet David Candow, the trainer for nearly every host
voice you hear on NPR. In an
article in the Washington Post Candow shares some tips for
polishing your radio production. His biggest piece of advice?
"Try to sound like...you."
- In radio, "the big adjective is a verb." Really. Think how much
more you can pack into a story by using an appropriate "floated,"
"cajoled" or "thunked."
- Brevity: Use words that are common in conversation, and keep your
sentences short and declarative.
- Voice: Imagine you're talking to a trusted friend, someone who
knows how funny and interesting and smart you are.
Read the
full article for even more good advice or download this
bonus "Writing for
Radio" handout that accompanied Candow's session at the
2005 Public Radio Program Director's Conference.
