Generation PRX T-Shirts: Wear your radio style

When Y-Press reporter Hrishi Deshpande asks John McCain about his plan for balancing social security and Medicare, the candidate seems taken aback. "I want a president who is short on talk and long on action," Deshpande says later. "That means lots of planning for the future, whether you're 12 like me or a senior citizen like McCain." That's right, the reporter is 12.

Maybe McCain hasn't checked in on Generation PRX lately. Anyone who listens to youth radio wouldn't be surprised by the creative and thought-provoking ways youth are approaching this election, and their future. Watch out, world.

Happy reading & listening,

The NBPC Masculinity Project

GPRX & WBEZ collaborative radio special

With support from the National Black Programming Consortium, GPRX is creating an hour-long radio special as part of The Masculinity Project. In collaboration with Chicago's WBEZ, the show will draw from the PRX catalogue to explore youth perspectives on cultures of masculinity "ranging from hip hop's place, to prejudiced gender roles in relationships - using music, beats and poetry." We're especially excited to work with host Nam1Sekatti (see below) and producer Jason Marck.

Does your youth radio group have pieces that explore rights and justice, African American cultural identity, economic status, or community and family? Be a part of this exciting collaboration. Upload them now or send an email to GenerationPRX(at)PRX(dot)org.

This month we're very excited to welcome Chantel to Generation PRX as the host of YouthCast, introducing the best of youth-made radio and blogging about it all at youthcast.org.

Former YouthCast host Kiera Feldman is helping Chantel learn the podcast ropes before she graduates college and sails off into the great wide world of travel and beyond. We wish her the best and know she'll always be a part of the PRXtended family!

Q&A with Nam1Sekatti

Hosting The Masculinity Project
Nam1Sekatti

When we were first introduced to Nam1Sekatti, host of the upcoming GPRX Masculinity Project special, we knew he had skills. The Chicago-area emcee (whose given name is Colin Alford) daylights as the supervisor of an animal hospital surgical ward and also plays basketball, writes, draws, records, and creates political hip-hop. No wonder he chose a stage name that is "it takes 1 man," spelled backwards! GPRX sat down with Nam to learn more*:

GPRX: How did you become an emcee? What inspires you to write and perform?

NAM: I have been writing poetry since I was 6 years old. I usually write about world affairs, apathy, political situations, and the struggle of the everyday person. I later came across spirituality, and metaphysics...this changed my whole outlook on existence.

GPRX: As a young producer, how do you see radio changing? What's your hope for the future of radio?

NAM: I see stations like PRX, NPR, and Vocalo changing radio to be a platform for local, unsigned artists. I love the transition!...My hope for the future of radio is to hear more conscious, political, uplifting, intelligent, spiritual lyrics!
