Jenny Asarnow - who many of you know as the rad producer behind such GPRX/KUOW collaborations as "Getting Raised," and "Our Time" - is in the midst of another blow-your-mind endeavor: as the winner of one of the MQ2 awards, Jenny is creating The Corner: 23rd and Union, an interactive multi-media documentary that is all about the corner of a rapidly changing neighborhood in the heart of Seattle's Central District.
A once-thriving African-American neighborhood, 23rd and Union is now "a half-empty ghost corner of weeds, parking lots and sporadic violence." With gentrification creating a new kind of flux, Jenny's project invites listening, dialogue and community-based documentary. Phone numbers invite residents to call and leave their own stories about the neighborhood, an installation features larger-than-life portraits of local community figures and the project website brings all this material together. Plus, Jenny's creating a production guide in August. She hopes everyone will steal her ideas.
