I would like to
introduce Generation PRX to Life-Play | phone adventures. I co-founded the organization with a few friends—one of whom is considered the
“Grandfather of American Improv Theatre,” David Shepherd. David created Compass Cabaret, the forerunner of Second City and SNL.
David turns 85 years old this Saturday. (Happy Birthday, David! I hope that I’m half as playful and creative when I’m David’s age.)
Life-Play is
phone-based, non-competitive theatre games, aka adventures that anyone can play. We provide clear guidelines that have been tested over the past 18 months. Life-Play phone sessions last anywhere from a few minutes to an hour and
bring new and old friends closer together and to themselves. Each player chooses the adventures they want to play.
Phone adventures explore beliefs, express feelings, unravel poems, visualize scenes and co-create stories. Life-Play can also be played in person.
Life-Play
increases self-awareness through creative self-exploration of your life and imagination. It’s fun! Life-Play is part improvised storytelling and part radio—since some people record their play and submit it to our
Life-Play Podcast. My friend recently commented that it’s like
This American Life between two friends on the phone.
Youth radio teachers can learn Life-Play adventures by joining one of our weekly Open House group calls and then teach and play with their students. Life-Play
boosts emotional intelligence and also fosters an egalitarian atmosphere, since for each adventure the player and guide switch/rotate. One of our contributors, Michael Golding, has been using Life-Play in Los Angeles public schools for six months with great success.
Youth radio teachers are free to submit the recordings to Life-Play in raw form or submit produced pieces, for consideration.
The emphasis of Life-Play is on friendship, creative collaboration and emotionally honest play. Life-Play is played by people around the world and of all ages.
We greatly welcome more teen involvement in Life-Play.
