About Me:
I like making baked goods, radio, and extravagant plans. These days I do the college thing in Providence, Rhode Island. I'm involved in Brown Student Radio and I'm an alum of the KBOO Youth Collective in my hometown of Portland, Oregon.

I get to feature some of the great work from Generation PRX on YouthCast--the Generation PRX podcast. Drop me a line with comments, suggestions, or a heads-up about newly posted audio on PRX that I should check out (or even just to say hello!).

"A Nightingale Among Ye" Behind-the-Scenes

Sam Greenspan gives the low-down on non-narrated radio stories. Indispensable advice on a range of topics: how to get interviewees to open up to you, how to decide whether or not narration is needed, structuring non-narrated stories, and sonic self-annihilation. Have a question of your own for Sam?

Just wanted to say I really dig the recent Youthcast segments, especially Thrift Town. "I can see your Mom wearing these." "My Mom's Jewish Lauren!" I just about hit the floor laughing when I heard that. My whole philosophy on thrift stores revolves around the idea that I always like what other people are wearing. There's not a better collection of other people's clothes than the thrift store. Plus, when you rip or stain a piece of clothing you got from a thrift store you loose less sleep knowing you paid a fraction of the price of a new item. I've always think about a point of no return at the thrift store especially when I notice those who purchase undergarments (did I just say undergarments? what am I 60?). I have no problem with hats or shoes however. You know whats the worse, when you bring home that sweet t-shirt and only then notice the sweet pit stains. But enough with the thrift stores.

I really enjoyed your Quien Soy episode & your investigations into "where am I from?" It reminded me of a writing exercise that I remember doing when I was younger that really confronts this question of "where am I from". It's a great exercise to do with young kids or just to kill time before a meeting. They can reveal quite a bit. It's called "I Am From Poem". The basic idea is to describe where you're from through 5 different stanzas with each stanza taking on a different context of answering the question. Each stanza starts with "I am from..." So the it would go 1) I am from...(sights,sounds, smells) 2) I am from...(sayings or things you heard) 3) I am from...(ancestry) 4) I am from...(music) 5) I am from...(games).

And I must comment on your trademark ending "a glimpse into the magic 8 ball of radio's future & the outlook is good." I love that! It's a wonderful closing - I'd put it up there with Keillor's all the woman are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average. Alright already, I'll stop hijacking your comments section.

Hey Kiera - Quite some time ago you replied to my thread about computer software in the forum & I just wanted to say I appreciate your responses. Thanks to you I am now registered with the Free Sound Project - thanks for the heads up on that useful tool. May I return the favor? I read an article the other day about a sound resource on Moby's website (everyone's favroite middle-aged bald man, next to Mr. Clean) - it's called moby gratis (http://www.mobygratis.com/film-music.html). Basically moby looks out for his fellow independent & non-profit film makers by offering free sounds Most the tracks are around 2 minutes in lengh & there is some really cool stuff that is sure to fit the bill of any emotion/scenario - the library in all is about 60 or so sound files, but I do believe more tracks are to be added. I also looked into "coffeehouse rendezvous" on archive.org with no luck...? Are you sure that's in fact the title?
